Solemn commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Schuman declaration Print E-mail
Speaking at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Schuman declaration on Monday evening at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, EPP Group Chairman Joseph Daul said that now is the time to introduce a true European Economic Government.

"The current crisis will pave the way for a new, strong European financial and economic government of an unprecedented reach. It is the only logical route to pursue after having implemented the common currency some ten years ago. All our governments must think and behave like Europeans, in every detail, when they decide on budgets, social expenditure and taxes."

"The Euro is the most tangible symbol of Europe's economic and political Union. Estonia is about to join the Euro. Ultimately, every single Member State of the EU, including the UK, will join it too."

Joseph Daul also paid tribute to the Schuman declaration's role in securing peace and prosperity in Europe:

"The Schuman declaration has enabled Europe to live in permanent peace for 60 years. And frankly, without this historic, audacious and ambitious plan having been implemented, the reunification of Europe after the velvet revolution of Eastern and Central Europe in the early 1990s would not have been possible", said the Chairman of the largest and most influential Group in the Parliament.
