Round Table Conference on the EU Eastern Neighbourhood
During the first weekend of October 2011, a high-level conference on "The EU Eastern Neigh­borhood - Between Authoritarianism and Democratic Transition" was hosted by the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation in cooperation with the Robert Schuman Foundation, on the Swedish island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea.

A number of topics were discussed during the conference, including Eastern Partnership: What Can and Should the EU do?; Russia at a Crossroads - Perspectives on the Upcoming Elections; The Transatlantic Link - A New Era in Security Policy; Ukraine - Balancing Between Russia and Europe and Belarus - On the Verge to Economic Collapse.

Many of the participants at the annual conference in Visby had been there before, while others participated at the roundtable conference for the first time. The President of Estonia and a number of ministers, including the Swedish Foreign Minister and the Defense Ministers from Estonia and Lithuania, took part in the discussions, as did former ministers from Russia, Ukraine and Norway. From Georgia, the Speaker of the Parliament and the Secretary of the National Security Council participated. United States were represented by Stephen B. Nix from the Inter­national Republican Institute, Former NATO Ambassador Kurt Volker, President of the Freedom House David J Kramer and Damon Wilson, Vice President of the Atlantic Council.
