Round-Table Conference on the Transition in Trouble


During the last weekend of October 2012, a high-level conference on "the Transition in Trouble - How to Tackle Negative Trends in the Eastern Neighbourhood" was hosted by the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation in cooperation with the Robert Schuman Foundation and the Moderate Party of Sweden, on the Swedish island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea.

A number of topics were discussed during the conference, including The Euro Crisis - Implications for the Eastern Neighbourhood Policies; The Russian Dilemma - Repression or Modernisation; Continuity in the Transatlantic Relationship and The Eastern Partnership in the Light of Three Elections.

Many of the participants at the annual confer­ence in Visby had been there before, while others participated at the roundtable confer­ence for the first time. Chatham House Rules are applied during the conference.

The host of the conference was the Swedish Foreign Minister, Mr Carl Bildt. A number of ministers, including the Prime Minister of Latvia, took part in the discussions, as did former minis­ters from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Norway. United States were represented by the American Ambassador to Sweden, Mr Mark Brzezinski as well as President of the Freedom House, Mr David J Kramer, and Mr Damon Wilson, Vice President of the Atlantic Council.

The conference started with a working dinner, where the Prime Minister of Latvia, Mr Valdis Dombrovskis was allowed to elaborate on how Latvia conquered the financial crisis.
